This turn combines the security of a low brace with a sense of flowing grace.
Like the stern rudder, it has no propulsive component. Forward momentum comes from the paddler's efforts or from moving water. The low brace turn is usually started with a sweep to the opposite side. Once the sweep is complete, rotate your torso toward the direction of the turn and place the non-power face of the paddle out to the side of the turn, even with your hip. The blade angle is nearly flat, with the forward edge raised slightly to keep it from diving. At the same time, edge the kayak in the direction of the turn. This will produce a wide arcing turn. Bear in mind that the critical component of this turn is the edge, not the paddle support. Try to execute well-edged low brace turns on both sides without actually touching the water with the paddle. This is a great way to learn the maneuver, and excellent practice for edging and torso rotation.
