This is a good choice for paddlers who want to explore quiet ponds, marshes and lagoons. As a true recreational kayak, the Manitou is not designed to be taken farther from shore than you can swim or into waters that may be exposed to any winds or waves. Which includes, for starters, the Hudson River, where conditions can change from hour to hour. The Manitou can handle more conditions then can the Manitou Sport.

The chair-like seat provides relaxed comfort for quiet-water paddling, but becomes an obstacle getting back into the boat after a capsize. The watertight rear compartment provides built-in flotation – a big plus vs. many other boats of this kind. The bow only has a foam pillar, so we strongly advise to add forward air bags, because a swamped boat that’s floating on an even keel is easier to rescue or tow than one with its bow pointed down.

If you want to paddle very protected waters and need a recreational kayak, the Manitou fits the bill. This kayak, like all true rec kayaks can’t be self rescued.
