Plastic kayaks should be carried on their side to prevent deforming the hull. Even fiberglass kayaks are strongest on their side. What we like about the Thule Hull-a-Port i
s that you can fit two kayaks on smaller roofs or four kayaks on larger roofs and they protect the kayak better than most kayak cradles. What we don't like is that they stick up high so taller vehicles may not fit into the garage. The kayak is loaded from the side of the vehicle, not from the back as most cradles. This is easy for some people, but not for others. Some people attach ropes to the high upright so they don't need to use straps. Hull-a-Port craddles can attach to factory racks without using a Thule bar.
