For years everyone loved the Kokatat Gore-Tex Dry Suit, but it was out of the price range of many kayakers. Now for under $300 you can have what Kokatat calls a "Paddling Suit." For just over $300 it comes with built in socks, which is well worth the extra money. Dry feet after a day of kayaking and stepping into the water is a dream come true. So why is it so much less then a Kokatat Gore-Text drysuit? It is made from Kokatat Tropos fabric and not Gore-Tex. It still breathes, but not as well as Gore-Tex. The neck is not latex and will have some water leakage when rolling or immersed in the water. It also uses a less expensive zipper and does not have a relief zipper or drop seat. Kokatat calls it a semi-drysuit. If you can afford the Kokatat Gore-Tex dry suit it is worth the extra money. But if the choice is between a wet suit or the Kokatat SuperNova, it is an easy choice. The largest downside of the SuperNova is the durability and the limited two year warrenty. We have a demo suit available to try.
Kokatat says: Nova: One-piece splash and spray protection for recreational paddling is more comfortable than neoprene. Punch-through neck closure, lightweight water sports zipper and reinforced seat and knees make this a great choice for canoeing, rafting or kayaking. 2-year warranty.
SuperNova: Building on the Nova, this paddling suit adds latex wrist gaskets, integrated socks and a relief zipper for men or a drop seat zipper for women. Designed for touring and recreational paddlers, this full-featured suit is not intended to replace a dry suit in more challenging conditions such as whitewater or very cold water. 2-year warranty.
Our TROPOS fabric is durable, multi-ply nylon Taslan® with custom DWR treatment and custom urethane coating. The microporous coating contains millions of pores small enough to prevent water droplets from entering, while still allowing moisture vapor to escape to the outside of the garment. TROPOS provides the same level of waterproof protection that paddlers have come to expect from Kokatat garments.
Expanding upon the success of our TROPOS waterproof/breathable fabric program, we will debut two semi-dry suits for 2005. The price and features of the SUPERNOVA make them ideal for recreational and touring paddlers, but they are not intended to replace dry suits in more challenging conditions. It has adjustable neoprene closures at the wrists and ankles and our APT (adjustable punch-through) neck closure. Nylon oxford seat and knee reinforcements improve durability. A lightweight, metal tooth watersports zipper keeps the wearer dry and comfortable in nearly all paddle sports applications. The SUPERNOVA semi-dry suit has a relief zipper, wrist gaskets, integrated TROPOS socks and Cordura® reinforcements to the seat, knees and elbows. There is a 2 year limited warranty on this semi-dry suit.
