Minicel Foam

We use minicel for all types of kayak outfitting. Minicel foam can be cut with a knife or jig saw and shaped with a rasp, sureform or dragon skin (available at the Center). We use contact cement or Mondo Bond to attach it to both glass and plastic kayaks.

The 1 inch foam can be bent around corners, while the 3 inch foam is rigid and is used in whitewater kayaks as stiffeners. Neoprene is softer and more flexible and better for some applications. After shaping the Minicel you can glue thin neoprene 1 to the Minicel giving it a more comfortable feel and more professional look.

It's easy stuff to work with, can be cut with a handsaw, serrated knife blade (an electric carving knife works very well too), shapes easily with sandpaper or rasp, and can be securely glued together using waterproof contact cement. Use to create, modify, or repair existing pieces of outfitting. 1" thickness works well for kneepads, hip pads, shims, etc.

"Raw" Minicel is ready for the craftsman to mold and form and create. Use a thicker (3") blank of foam to serve as structure for pedestals, deep-dish knee pads, curved thigh hooks, etc. It's easily cut, shaped, and glued to repair, modify, or replace existing outfitting.
