See What Level Tour Should I Take?
Advanced programs are designed to be both challenging and instructional. Only strong paddlers who have taken our intermediate instructional program or have equivalent experience should sign up. These trips cover more miles, at a faster pace, with fewer stops and are in exposed areas which can get very rough. We don't transport rental equipment to these locations, so you'll need to bring your own kayak.
Prerequisite: 4 Star Skills.
Advanced programs start earlier and finish anytime between 4:00 and 8:00 depending on the conditions.

A sea kayak version of the Circle Line cruise. We go with the tide, averaging about 4 knots. The intimate view of Manhattan Island is spectacular and is a classic sea kayak trip. Distance: 10-15 miles
Location: Guilford, Connecticut
Venue: Long Island Sound
Note: No Rental boats available. Must bring own boat.
Starting at Guilford we head off shore to Falkner Island. Falkner Island is part of the National Wildlife Refuge and the island is off limits. The crossing out to Falkner Island is about four miles, but due to its location, the conditions can be rough. From Falkner we will head over to Goose Island for lunch. Our return route will take us northwest to Sachem Head by the Thimble Islands for a rest stop before we return to Guilford.
Distance: 12-16 miles
Location: Bridgeport, Connecticut
Venue: Long Island Sound
Note: No Rental boats available. Must bring own boat.
Crossing the Long Island Sound is for strong paddlers who want to experience a long crossing. Starting at Bridgeport, we will make our way over to Port Jefferson, on Long Island. It is approximately twelve miles of open water, with no stops. At the mouth of Port Jefferson, we will stop for our snack break, and then continue into the harbor, to a takeout close to the ferry. We will go out to lunch in town, before our ferry trip back to Connecticut. Price of the ferry trip is not included.

Distance: 14-18 miles
Location: Staten Island, New York
Venue: Outer New York Harbor
Note: No Rental boats available. Must bring own boat.
With the tide in our favor, we head under the Verrazano Narrows Bridge and cross over to Gravesend Bay in Brooklyn. Rounding Norton Point, we head to the Coney Island amusement park area for lunch. A surf landing is very likely. After a hot dog on the boardwalk at Nathan's and perhaps an amusement ride or two, we start our return journey. This program offers long distance, open water, possible rough water, surf landing and lunch at a world famous location.
Staten Island to Sandy Hook Crossing -
3.0
![]()
Distance: 14-20 miles
Location: Staten Island, New York
Venue: Outer New York Harbor, Raritan Bay
Note: No Rental boats available. Must bring own boat.
Starting at Miller Field we will head out into Raritan Bay. Using the currents to our advantage we will head over to the tip of Sandy Hook. At the tip we must cross the channel, which flows at up to 2.3 knots around the headland. This area can get very exciting, with seas up to six feet and heavy boat traffic. Arriving near the tip of Sandy Hook, we are likely to have a surf landing. We'll have lunch and explore the area on foot before we start on our return trip. Depending on the conditions we might visit Old Orchard Light, or head over to Norton Point on our return journey.
